Ortofon SPU on turntable

Pick up a Danish

Danish pick-up perfectionist Ortofon has announced a new addition to its instantly recognisable SPU cartridge range, first introduced back in 1958.

The new models include the SPU GTX S at £949 and SPU GTX E at £999. Both boast the same iconic SPU body shape and direct tonearm connection, with the former sporting a spherical diamond tip and the latter an upgraded elliptical diamond tip.

Band-built in Denmark, their bodies are now moulded in one piece from a specially selected glass-fibre reinforced co-polymer, never before used for SPU cartridges, for a rigid, low-resonance housing system.

Despite the SPU being a moving-coil generator at heart, inside each’s body resides a built-in step-up transformer offering a 4mV output, meaning the SPU can be connected directly into moving-magnet amplifier inputs.

Other features include a Ortofon’s exclusive stylus suspension system and oxygen-free copper quad coil.
