Martin’s headphone playlist

Here’s my cherry-picked songs to get the best from your cans.

This extended list of tracks, brings together music that I have used over recent headphone reviews.

These songs have been chosen for a number of reasons and allow listeners to concentrate on certain aspects of reproduction, including bass, mid-field and treble, alongside production and effects.

Some of the music included is thers simply because I enjoy it, but then what is the point of having technical excellence if there is no emotional connection? That said, if Thunderstruck and Welcome To The Jungle aren’t rocking out your system then it has an issue, or two!

Other tracks have been featured to intentionally tease out issues, such as Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah. This is superb, but its close miked vocals can lead to some sharp fricatives. An issue with which Fleetwood Mac’s Big Love and Phil Collins’ Son Of Man can also relate to.

Why have two versions of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto? Because these are very different, with one being live with a full orchestral, the other a more intimate affair, with the piano supported by a string quintet. Both are full of ambient information, which is rarely completely well rendered.

As I review other cans I will add additional tracks to this list, so do check back as the list grows and share with us which songs get your headphones singing (or not)! Enjoy…
