Esteemed British tonearm and turntable manufacturer SME treated us to not one but three new product reveals at an exclusive launch event on Friday for its new Model 8 and Model 35 turntables, the latter boasting a new Series Vi Tonearm.
Model 35 and Vi arm
Designed to replace the Model 30, the Model 35 takes much of its design language from the brand’s flagship Model 60 player, signalling a new direction for SME’s heralded LP spinners.
Key features include a ‘Tri-Column Design’ (derived from the Model 60’s quad-column approach) with de-coupled feet featuring multipoint isolation. These house an improved suspension system with advancements in vertical and horizontal control, for better stability.
Elsewhere its main bearing sports an innovative hydraulic damping system while its sophisticated speed control comes from SME’s state-of-the-art electronics powered by an AC motor with separate transformer, derived from the Model 60.
The all new SME Series Vi Tonearm (that’s ‘i’ for ‘improved’, as a nod to SME’s model names of old) is constructed from high-density, high-rigidity CMC machined non-metallic polymer resin for acoustical inertness.
Available in anodised black and silver for £35,999 or midnight blue and gunmetal finishes for £37,999 read more details on SME’s website.
Model 8
Building on the legacy of the Model 6, SME’s new Model 8 boasts a 40% increase in mass over its predecessor for improved stability and resonance control, partly thanks to a thicker platter. Other updates include advanced adjustable feet, refined mounting boards and upgraded RCA sockets now made by WBT, alongside an improved mounting plate for its PSU connector.
The Model 8’s external speed control unit is also improved, with advanced tech derived from the Model 60.
Eagle-eyed readers will also see there’s been a change in tonearm, whereas the Model 6 was equipped with an SME M2-9, the Model 8 gets a higher spec Model 309 sporting magnesium wand and removable headshell.
Available in white, midnight blue and ‘SME’ black finishes, visit SME for more details.
Spectacular sounds
Hearing both decks being put through their paces with everything from Massive Attack to SME’s own orchestral recordings was an audio experience to savour.
Partnering gear was equally exotic, including Nagra HD phono stage and Siltech’s Saga System (comprised of C1 preamp, P1 power amp and Symphony speakers). Special thanks to the team at SME and Cadence for showcasing everything SME brings to the (turn)table.
